COVID-19

Rapid igG and igM test kits

Why are Antibody test kits so important!

What is an IgG and an IgM antibody?

There is a lot of information online and in the news about antibody test kits, but most it fails to explain what is an antibody test and how do they work.

What is an antibody?

An antibody is something that the human body creates when it start to fight a virus or infection like COVID-19 (caused by the Coronavirus). The human body creates antibodies as a defense as soon as the body is attacked by a virus. This is also how vaccines work.

What is an antibody test?

An Antibody test, sometimes called a serology test, is a quick and accurate way to check if a person's blood contains two antibodies that can provide valuable insight into patient exposure. Medical science has identified two important antibodies that are produced shortly after a patient is infected by the coronavirus. An antibody test is NOT looking for the actual virus, but is looking for the evidence or antibodies that are produced when the body is attacked by the coronavirus.

How does an antibody test work?

An antibody test uses whole blood (or plasma) collected by using a lancet and pipette. Like a glucose test, the finger is pricked and a very small amount of blood is collected.

The blood drop is placed on to the sample well of a test cassette. Several drops of buffer is added to allow the blood to flow smoothly through the test strip. When the test runs, a series of lines appear (similar to a pregnancy test) and can be interpreted using a simple interpretation guide. Most antibody tests can detect two kinds of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, igG and igM.

  • IgM antibodies, can develop early in an infection.

  • IgG antibodies, are more likely to show up later after patient recovery.

The medical community is not sure how long it takes for this to happen with SARS-CoV-2. More time and testing is needed to improve our understanding.
